This year’s 17th running of the FAM 5K “Fund” Run/ Walk will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Schoharie County. Habitat for Humanity strengthens our community and invites people of all backgrounds, races, and religions to build houses with families in need. Each partner family must put in sweat equity, pay some closing costs upon home completion, and repay a no-interest mortgage. These payments are used to help build more houses. Habitat is a worldwide, nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing with the conviction that everyone should have a decent, safe, and affordable home.
Featured in Runner’s World, Investment News, and the Wall Street Journal, the FAM 5K will attract more than 800 participants and 200 volunteers to the Cobleskill Fairgrounds at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 25th to compete and support Habitat for Humanity of Schoharie County. The Adirondack Association of USA Track and Field sanctions the FAM 5K while FAM Funds is the main sponsor.
“We continue this fall event because these local charities rely on our support. Our goal is to help raise awareness about each organization while providing financial resources,” said Race Director Peter Sweetser. Since the event’s inception in 1994, the FAM 5K’s mission has been to endorse and promote the qualities of family, good health and service to the community.
The proceeds from the race are donated to one of five different local charities on a rotating basis: Catholic Charities of Schoharie County, Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Habitat for Humanity of Schoharie County, Schoharie County ARC, and Schoharie County Community Action Program. Each of the past several years the FAM 5K has donated more than $20,000 annually.
One unique aspect of the FAM 5K is that FAM Funds awards mutual fund shares to both male and female winners in various age categories. There are also many human interest stories including multigenerational families who partake in the event as well as people who have been participating for 17 years.
