Company Profile

Fenimore Asset Management, Inc. (Fenimore) is an independent investment advisory firm located in the picturesque Schoharie Valley town of Cobleskill, New York. Thomas O. Putnam founded Fenimore in 1974 as a means to manage family money after they sold Fenimore Fabrics, a textile company named after famous local author James Fenimore Cooper.

During that time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined more than 50%. However, the Putnam family assets posted modest gains during this same time period. Word of Tom’s success spread and soon he was investing money for friends and local businesses.

Tom’s vision for the firm was to establish a patient, long-term value approach to investing based on a consistent process. Tom’s method was to research and invest in high quality companies with strong growth potential. He bought them at a discounted price knowing that over time they should provide superior returns for his investors.

Fenimore manages separate individual and institutional portfolios and is the investment advisor to the FAM Funds - the FAM Value Fund and FAM Equity-Income Fund. For more than three decades, Fenimore has been hand-selecting investments as if we were going to buy the entire company. In doing so, we aim to fulfill our dual purpose:
  • To preserve our investors’ assets and maximize total return on capital by seeking investments that demonstrate promising long-term growth potential.
  • To focus on personal relationships and gain the trust of our investors.
